DISCOVERY OF HANOI ON A VESPA (HALF DAY)

08:00. Meet your Vespa driver and transfer to the meeting point. Enjoy an egg coffee during the tour briefing. Your tour guide will inform you about the day’s itinerary and destinations, and also answer any of your questions.

Our day starts with a visit to the Hanoi Opera House, Hoan Kiem Lake, and Ly Thai To Monument. The latter is a cultural and architectural work which honors King Ly Thai To (974 – 1028), the first king who founded the city of Thang Long (Hanoi today). 

We continue our visit to St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a Roman Catholic cathedral built in neo-gothic style at the end of the 19th century and then Hoa Lo prison. Hoa Lo was used by the French colonists for political prisoners, and later by the North Vietnamese for U.S. prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. The French called it Maison Central, a generic name for a colonial prison, while during the Vietnam War it was nick named ‘the Hanoi Hilton’. Whatever the name, this notorious prison housed a century of torture within its walls. 

Keep traveling to the west of Hanoi. Visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (outside only) in Ba Dinh Square, and nearby Huu Tiep Lake where, in 1972, Vietnamese anti-aircraft guns shot down an eight-engine, 100-ton plane and its relic remains today in the lake as a poignant reminder of this period of Vietnam’s history. 

The next stops are West Lake (Ho Tay), and Tran Quoc Pagoda (this ancient pagoda is located on an islet/peninsula in the middle of West Lake) before driving to a local restaurant for drinks and a selection of street food. 

After a short rest, we drive to visit Long Bien Bridge which is the oldest bridge in Hanoi, the first to span the Red River and today’s one of the city’s iconic symbols. Here, you can take time to enjoy the view and your tour guide will introduce the history of the bridge as well as share details about the life of locals. 

Lunch at a local restaurant near the river bank before your Vespa driver takes you back to your hotel in Hanoi.
